Car Rental Insurance?

So, should you purchase rental car insurance? Here’s how to know:

Before you rent a car, review your personal car insurance policy. As long as you have liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage, you should be adequately covered. Your auto policy will extend to a rental car. In that case, you shouldn’t need to purchase rental car insurance.
Keep in mind that if you're driving internationally (apart from Canada), your current auto insurance probably won't cover you.
If you don't have comprehensive or collision coverage and wreck a rental car, you may pay out-of-pocket for damages. That's why it's essential to read your policy before you rent a vehicle to understand what's covered.
Accidents and mysterious damages do occur in rental vehicles.  When you rent a car and don't purchase the rental company's insurance you will need to pay the triggered deductibles and follow the claim through till repairs are made just as if it were your vehicle that was in the accident.  These claims can affect your rates even in the case when it is not your fault.
If you don't have auto insurance, you'll need to at least purchase liability coverage from the rental company since it’s required in most states.
Additional scenarios where it makes sense to consider rental car insurance:
You're only protected under a commercial car insurance policy.
You don't want to risk paying a high deductible.
Your current policy doesn't include comprehensive and collision coverage.
Rental car insurance will cost you an extra $5 to $30 per day, depending on the coverage you choose. It may not always be necessary, but it can be a lifesaver in the situations I outlined above.
